Open Question: Training program making copies of social security card, should I allow them?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

I am taking a training certificate training program for computer repair. I was told that they make copies of your social security card, passport, and High School diploma. The program is legit and not a scam. I can understand that they need to see them but to go as far as making actual hard copies of these documents ( which could result in identity theft) worries me.
Is this standard procedure for jobs or training programs? What should I do or ask them?

Open Question: ACN Wireless question?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

ACN Wireless is requesting a copy of my drivers license and my social security card to verify my identity. I can understand since I’m ordering online that they must be sure I am who I say I am, but I’m not comfortable giving them a copy of my SS card because of all the identity theft going on. If my fax got into the wrong hands someone would then know my name, address, DOB, SS# and DL#….everything they need to steal my identity. They said I could send a copy of my Passport, in leiu of a SS Card, but I don’t have one.

I know that they are a legit company, but this seems unusual. Has anyone else had this experience? Were you able to get around it?

Open Question: Would that be considered Identity Theft? What would be the effect of such to one’s personal background?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

I recently find out that one of my inlaw has been using my name and information in making subscription thru internet to various company promos and charging the monthly subscription fees to his sister’s billing address, therefore both of us are victims here. Will there be any adverse effect of this in my credit background? Fortunately, I have cancelled all of them just in time but my name was still on their list. Am I black listed then? Should I take this seriously and seek professional help? What do you think?

Resolved Question: Identity Theft?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

I am giving a safety presentation next week at work on identity theft. What are some ways you can protect your identity? What are some things people do with your identity. How do they get your information? Do you know of any websites where I can get more info? Thanks!

Open Question: How Can I Find Out If I owe Any Money To The Following..?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Last year…I believe I called some people who were responsible at working on “identity theft protection plans” for people who are worried about getting their identity stolen. I applied to it and paid the admission for the first month. I am not so sure if I have cancelled the plan a week later or not =-/ (I am terrible at remembering) I don’t even recall what their companys name was and I don’t have their phone number. I only assume that I am no longer a member and don’t owe any money due to the fact that I am not receiving any payments or bills. How can I find out? Any advice/suggestions?

I also applied to some life insurance plan, but I am still unsure whether or not if I cancelled it. How can I find out if I am still applied into these plans without knowing any number or company name. I just don’t want to be in debt 10 years later, knowing that I have been applied to all these plans without any payment/bill.

I haven’t received any bill/payment in the mail nor any phone call

Resolved Question: Will someone please explain how can you be a law-abiding citizen when identity theft, four counts of forgery ?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Can anyone please explain how anyone could be made out to be a law-abiding citizen when charged with two counts of identity theft, four counts of forgery and a single count of tampering with public records and in the country illegally?
“He’s been a law-abiding citizen, except he’s an alien,” Northampton County Judge Stephen Baratta said.

Open Question: I have people sending me spam mail using my email address as the sending address. Isn’t this illegal?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

I would like to know how you can forward this to someone who can stop it from happening. Or someone who can do something about someone performing this form of fraud and identity theft.
